Holistic treatment balancing the mental, physical and chemical - Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine Program

Dr. Jo carefully reviews laboratory tests within the context of patient’s comprehensive medical history including past and present ailments, nutritional and medicinal usage to find a pattern of functional imbalance. He places sincere effort into prevention, halting the progression of imbalance before it develops into an actual disease.  He believes they are an essential part of diagnostic evaluation to attain true wellness.

When evaluating blood chemistry, there are primarily two types of ranges used as a reference. One is the pathological range, which is used to diagnose disease, and the other is the functional (aka optimal) range, which is used to assess risk for disease before it develops into an actual disease.

The primary difference between the two ranges is in a degree of deviation within their normal ranges. For example, the functional range for glucose may be 80 – 95 mg/dl, whereas the pathological range may be 60-100 mg/dl. As you can see, the functional range is much more limited than the pathological range. When the value is higher than the pathological range, it may indicate diabetes. When the value lies between the upper limit of the functional range and lower limit of pathological range, it may indicate insulin resistance, a condition that may predispose a person to becoming diabetic.

In a traditional medical setting, a doctor focuses on diagnosing a disease when the value is registered out of the pathological range.  A practitioner of holistic wellness and preventive medicine, on the other hand, emphasizes on achieving a functional balance, and thereby, observes a deviation outside of the functional range as a flag against one’s optimal wellbeing.

Functional diagnostic tests beyond blood samples are frequently assessed to further analyze the biochemistry of a patient in order to come with the best intervention. Saliva tests are beneficial for evaluating endocrine function including reproductive and adrenal function. Presence of certain allergy is effectively determined by a saliva test also.

Urine test is valuable in detecting various condition and imbalance such as:  endocrine issues, oxidative stress, infection, kidney and bladder problem, diabetes and various metabolites.

Stool tests at times are a vital part of a diagnostic workup as well. Key components of proper gastrointestinal health include measurement of beneficial microbial flora, opportunistic bacteria, yeast, parasitic infection, markers of inflammation, immune function, and digestion and absorption.
